What We Do!
Outreach is a major part of the FORTCAST initiative. We hope to engage the greater northern Colorado region with fun and exciting methods to foster learning about the atmosphere and the processes contained within.
If you're interest in having FORTCAST come to your school or organization and give a talk, please fill out our request form (http://fortcast.atmos.colostate.edu/outreach.htm) and we'll contact you ASAP!
For further information or if you have any questions, please contact our education/outreach chair Kyle Chudler at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Other activities FORTCAST participates in include:
- Little Shop of Physics
- Young Scientist Symposium on Atmospheric Research
- School is Cool
- Fort Collins Museum of Discovery Weather Day
- Mentoring Students
- Weather Discussions
- Journal Club
Little Shop of Physics
The Little Shop of Physics is a hands-on science outreach program within CSU's Physics Department and one of CMMAP's K-12 Education partners. FORTCAST members volunteer to teach science to the thousands of people who attend every year. This event is free and open to the public and was held this past year on Saturday, February 27, 2016 in the Lory Student Center and Engineering Building. To learn more about the Little Shop of Physics Open House, please visit www.lsop.colostate.edu/.
Young Scientist Symposium on Atmospheric Research
The Young Scientist Symposium on Atmospheric Research (YSSAR) is a one-day meeting for young scientists, including students and postdoctoral researchers, along the Front Range. Presenters at YSSAR can practice their presentation skills, and YSSAR provides opportunities for presenters and attendees alike to learn about their fellow peers' current research topics, network, and meet potential collaborators. YSSAR 2014 will be held at CSU on October 10. For more information, please visit the YSSAR website at http://www.atmos.colostate.edu/yssar/ or send an email to email@example.com.
School is Cool
Throughout the summer, FORTCAST helps organize BBQ fundraisers whose profits go towards School is Cool, a community outreach effort managed and organized by CSU employees that provides backpacks and school supplies to K-12 students in Fort Collins, Wellington, Timnath and LaPorte, and to outlying mountain schools. Many of our members also volunteer their time to help pack and distribute the newly purchased or donated supplies! For more information, please visit http://schooliscool.colostate.edu/.
Fort Collins Museum of Discovery Weather Day
Fort Collins Museum of Discovery Weather Day is a free event that teaches science to children! FORTCAST volunteers present activities that demonstrate atmospheric processes and phenomena in a fun and exciting way!
Facilitating intellectual growth in the next generation of atmospheric scientists is an important part of our mission. We are eager to mentor young students interested in atmospheric science. Contact our education/outreach chair Kyle Chudler at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information!
Student-led discussions are a great way to keep in touch with current/recent weather, foster discussions with fellow classmates, and gain experience leading such conversations. The WX Discussions are meant to be informal! WX Discussions will take place in the Colorado State University Department of Atmospheric Science Weather Lab (on the first floor of the main building between Room 101 and the front office). For more info, please see: Weather Lab Wiki
Journal Club is a great way to stay on top of seminal or current literature in an informal setting with other students.
